Thomas Dutronc

+ special guests Sophie Alour (artiste génération Spedidam), Malo Mazurié & Pierre Baldy-Moulinier

WithSpedidamsupport

Let's remember that the Spedidam Generation's Thomas Dutronc earned his guitarist stripes in gypsy jazz before venturing into song. With his gypsy vibes, it's like his father's journey is starting all over again (rock guitarist in El Toro and the Cyclones from 1961). Thomas fell in love with Django Reinhardt's music at the age of 18. He met the guitarist Romane in the famous Chope des Puces club in Saint-Ouen and he became his teacher and mentor. He was then seen playing "la pompe", including in Vienne in 2002, surrounded by Romane, Tchavolo and Dorado in Bireli Lagrène's Gypsy Project. Then the young man moved into the spotlight in 2007 with his first album as a swinging singer: Comme Un Manouche Sans Guitare. Instant success! Now he's back in Vienne with his guests Sophie Alour and Malo Mazurié.

Line-up : Thomas Dutronc (g, v), Rocky Gresset (g), Jérôme Ciosi (g), Maxime Zampieri (dms), David Chiron (cb), Pierre Blanchard (v), Sophie Alour (s), Malo Mazurié (tp),Pierre Baldy-Moulinier (tb)

Anomalie

WithSpedidamsupport

Anomalie is the live project by Nicolas Dupuis, the incredible Montreal-based keyboard player and producer. Nicolas Dupuis is an accomplished musician, stylish writer whose notes, harmonies and work on sound is reminiscent of Jacob Collier and Haywyre, and has taught at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. The young prodigy named himself Anomalie and released the album Métropole Part II (2018), a second project packed with funk, raw soul and electro jazz inspired by his Quebec kingdom. Alongside four musicians, the Canadian has won over audiences at Summercamp, the Montreal and Toronto Jazz Festivals and opened for Kamasi Washington. His videos have had millions of views on social networks and earned praise from Tom Misch, Thundercat and Electro Deluxe.

Bonga

With Spedidamsupport

Because he was born in 1942 in Angola, José Adelino Barcelo de Carvalho a.k.a. Bonga is entitled to showcase his incredibly raspy voice backed up by his dikanza, his elder status. He did it with a 31st album oozing timeless semba, morna and fado. The Recados de Fora ("Messages from elsewhere") was recorded with ease in Lisbon, Mindelo and Paris. Lisbon because the once colonised singer turned rebel under the name Bonga Kuenda ("he who rises and marches") now lives in Portugal. Mindelo because São Vicente island in Cape Verde (where Césaria Evora was born) is home to most of his fantastic musicians. Last but not least, Paris where Bonga found his artistic haven of peace with the Lusafrica label in 2000 founded by Cape Verde's José da Silva.

Line-up : Bonga (v, cga, dikanza), Betinho (g), Ciro Lopes (accordéon), Hernani Pinto Lagrosse (b), Djipson (dms)

Neneh Cherry

With Spedidamsupport

You could be forgiven for forgetting Neneh Cherry's roots following her interstellar success in the 90s. She was brought up by the trumpet player Don Cherry and hurtled through the 80s on the front line of Rip Rig + Panic, an electro collective dabbling in punk, funk and free jazz. Wild and free. Thirty years later and she's still a free spirit. As with her last album (Blank Project. 2014), Neneh Cherry joined forces with Four Tet (Kieran Hebden), the master of electro reverie and crushing rhythms. Broken Politics is only the rebel's fifth album (eighth with CirKus and The Thing). Political issues (abortion, violence etc.) still appear in the choruses of the singer who has used her triumphs to revile America and all its imperialism.

Papatef

With Spedidamsupport

Papatef is like a polymorphous solo experience blending the musical DJ selection, drum improvisation, percussions and voice of Cyril Atef, a performer from Planet Bumcello (with Vincent Segal, seven albums on the clock). After countless adventures with Julien Lourau, Yves Robert, Barbès National Orchestra, Brigitte Fontaine, Alain Bashung, Matthieu Chedid, Gnawa Njoum Experience and Oshen, famous for his more personal journeys, African electro-groove, with CongopunQ (paired with Monsieur Cong), Cyril Atef is also involved in the Fufu Machine project with singer and guitarist Piers Faccini. He got involved in Pachibaba with Olivier Araste (from Lindigo) and Fixi in 2017. The Berlin native (1968) is finally coming to the Roman Theatre as Papatef, a solo human machine.

Obradović-Tixier Duo

With Spedidam support

Obradović-Tixier Duo is the combination of French pianist David Tixier and Croatian drummer Lada Obradovic. The duo produce a contemporary, fresh and stylish sound blending acoustic and electronic instruments, moog, Fender Rhodes, glockenspiel, mbira and other playthings. A soft yet striking performance that won over the panel at last June's Tremplin Focal Jazz à Vienne. David's sophisticated harmonies and lyrical drama interweave with Lada's polorhythms. An almost serial shamanic piano phrase is muffled by digital blankets whilst a volley of cymbals whisks us away like wings beating through the air. Together, the pair weave a captivating tale. Impressive.

Line-up : Lada Obradović (dms, perc, gluckenspeil, v, DSP, comp), David Tixier (p, k, v, DSP, comp)
