Jacques Ferrandez was born in 1955 in Algiers. After attending the National School of Decorative Arts in Nice, he turned to illustration and comics, and his first works appeared in the magazine “(À suivre)” as early as 1978. In 1987, he began “Carnets d’Orient”, an epic series chronicling the 132 years of French presence in Algeria, from the conquest to independence. An undisputed expert on Algerian affairs, he adapted Albert Camus’s work for Gallimard BD with “L’Hôte” in 2009, before masterfully adapting “L’Étranger” in 2013 and “Le Premier Homme” in 2017.
His books have been the subject of numerous exhibitions in France and Algeria, notably at Les Invalides in 2012, marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Algerian War. He received the 2012 Historia Special Jury Prize for his “Carnets d’Orient”.
In “Suites algériennes”, Jacques Ferrandez explores the contemporary history of Algeria from 1962 to the present day.
