Music Director for Radio France’s stations since July 2019, Didier Varrod joined the group in 1985 under Jean Louis Foulquier, after earning a master’s degree in history in Grenoble and Paris. From 1991 to 1998, he left public broadcasting to join the music industry at Polydor as artistic director and then at Columbia, where he became director of production. He returned to France Inter in 1999 as producer of several music programs, including “Électron libre,” dedicated to electronic music, for nine years. As the station’s music director from 2012 to 2016, he made a name for himself by launching a new generation of artists on the radio, including Woodkid, Christine & the Queens, Benjamin Clémentine, Fauve, La Femme, Feu! Chatterton, Radio Elvis, Jain, and Jeanne Added… He returned to France Inter in September 2016 as producer of the program “Foule sentimentale,” dedicated to the French music scene.

Didier Varrod has established artist residencies that serve as incubators and platforms to boost the visibility of numerous artists. He is also the director of some twenty landmark documentaries on French chanson for public television, all of which have been met with great critical acclaim and high viewership.

The author of a dozen books on French pop music, Didier Varrod has also served as a programmer for major music festivals and events, such as the Francofolies de la Rochelle, the Nuit des électrons libres at Futuroscope in Poitiers, and the FNAC Live festival… He was named a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters in January 2011.
