To mark the 100th anniversary of Miles Davis’s birth and the 45th edition of the Jazz à Vienne festival, the Vienne History Museum—Saint-Pierre Church—is hosting the exhibit “Miles Davis: 100 Years of Influence.”

A major figure in the festival’s history and an absolute jazz legend, Miles Davis will be celebrated through an immersive and evocative exhibit, designed as a journey through his work and his era.

The exhibit is divided into several sections:

• Miles in the Press: a deep dive into the music press featuring historic front pages and rare articles from Jazz Magazine
• Miles in Comics: a unique comic-book perspective through Jacques Ferrandez’s original panels chronicling his biography
• Miles in Vinyl: a collection of records tracing the work of Miles and the artists and bands who accompanied him, drawn from exceptional collections
• Miles in photographs: previously unpublished photos compiled by the INA and a collective of photographers present at the concerts held at Jazz à Vienne
• Miles in images: settle in to view INA archives, legendary concerts performed at Jazz à Vienne, and a sneak preview of the new documentary on Miles directed by Patrick Savey (Zycopolis Productions)
• Miles in music: every day at 2 p.m., a listening session will bring together artists, collectors, and journalists to share anecdotes, analyses, amemories about the work of Miles Davis, in the spirit of knowledge-sharing cherished by Jazz à Vienne and JAZZ(s)RA

“Miles Davis: 100 Years of Influence” invites the public and anyone curious to rediscover the boldness, elegance, and influence of a musician who never stopped reinventing jazz. An unmissable event in the heart of Vienne, blending living memory with a vibrant celebration.

This exhibit is co-produced by the Jazz à Vienne festival, JAZZ(s)RA, and the Département de l'sère. It is supported by the INA, Jazz Magazine, Patrick Savey, and Jacques Ferrandez, as well as contributions from artisans in Isère: MAM (Marc Agier-Meyer, speaker manufacturer), Jérôme Fort & l’Atelier Ondé (cabinetmakers and furniture makers), and tempo fà (Caroline Guillet, antique dealer).

A long-standing partner of major cultural events, the Institut national de l’audiovisuel (INA) promotes France’s audiovisual heritage and supports projects that bring heritage and creativity together. Through the use of its archives and the production of original content, the INA helps audiences rediscover works, artists, and defining moments in cultural life from a contemporary perspective.

For the 2026 edition of Jazz à Vienne, the INA is collaborating on the festival’s programming. The selection and contextualization work carried out by archivists within the collections brings together recordings of historic concerts, rare interviews with the musician broadcast on French television, and photographs from period news reports.

These materials are made available to the festival, accompanied by an original film created specifically for the event. Screened on July 4 to open the “Miles / Coltrane Celebration” evening, this film offers the audience an immersive experience in the artist’s legacy.

Franck Chalendard

Born in 1966 in Haute-Loire, Franck Chalendard lives and works in Saint-Étienne.

For the Halle des Bouchers, Franck Chalendard plans to create a series of large-format canvases inspired by jazz variations, as well as sculptures that will serve as extensions of these paintings into space and volume, resulting in a three-dimensional extension of the painting, a control of space through painting in a contrapuntal harmony in which he will suggest the superimposition of all the languages at work: that of the architecture of the space, of form, of color, and of music.

Just a stone’s throw from the Théâtre Antique, Galerie Minus invites you from June 25 to July 11 to discover the exhibition “Jazz à Minus IV.” This exhibition features graphic works (paintings, drawings, etc.) on the themes of jazz, musicians, and the city of Vienna, by a selection of local artists.

Events (opening reception, musical performances) will complement the exhibition. From classical to street art, you can admire paintings, sculptures, photographs, and watercolors, as well as find silkscreen prints, drawings, posters, and postcards by the artists. A treat for the eyes of art lovers and jazz fans alike!

Spirit, are you still here? What remains of the giants of jazz? What remains of those who left their mark on the ever-changing world of this multifaceted music?

Photographer Daniel Peyreplane and painter François Robin offer their answer to this question: an imaginary concert-journey featuring a dream lineup, tracing the path of a jazz that lives on forever. The exhibit “Esprit & Compagnonnage” takes us on a journey in the company of famous musicians, all companions of Miles Davis, through the palimpsest-like works of these two passionate artists—disturbing assemblages of photographs and drawings created during concerts that form strange snapshots, with an intelligence that is anything but artificial, but which draws its source from the roots of emotion.
