The festival paid homage to Duke Ellington, who would have been 100 in 1999. There were many big bands, a large number of homages and even the arrival of a few rare survivors of the Duke Ellington era, who helped to invent jazz and gave music in general a new lease of life. Clark Terry, Norris Turney, Buster Cooper, Aaron Bell, Jimmy Woode and Louie Bellson were all on hand to celebrate the great man.
