PAR LES DAMNÉ.E.S DE LA TERRE - DES VOIX DE LUTTES 1969-1988

Rap artist Rocé is behind the Par les Damné.e.s de la terre, des voix de luttes 1969-1988 compilation of 24 French songs from all over the world. The exhibition explores the four years it took Rocé to produce this compilation with original sleeves, lyrics and audio excerpts. Rocé is from the generation that saw the birth of French rap and its huge appeal among the children of second and third generation immigrants. He wanted to venture beyond rap and tap into French-language artists fuelling what he called "the poetry of crisis", thin-skinned poetry. It's reluctantly committed, the cause doesn't allow otherwise, so this poetry is by the "damné.e.s de la terre." The current migration situation and identity issues make this compilation all the more topical… Rocé sees this musical and heritage project as filling a hole: it gives a voice to new generations living in France with a lack of identification, a lapse in the memory of their parents' history in the political and cultural landscape that they experience as they grow up. The Par les Damné.e.s de la terre compilation write a new chapter in the history of French music set against the fights to liberate native countries, labour battles and exiles.
