Dhafer Youssef was born in 1967 in Teboulba, a small Tunisian fishing village, and has become a master of the oud, a creative, innovative and sensitive composer and, an increasingly pure vocalist. He comes from a long line of muezzins so his impressive vocal control is a family legacy. His grandfather soon spotted the potential of his voice and introduced the young Dhafer to reciting the Koran. A vocation was born. Now based in Paris and after the phenomenal success of his album Birds Requiem, Dhafer Youssef is back with Diwan of Beauty and Odd (2016) which is a harmonious blend of hypnotically beautiful Sufi vocals and contemporary jazz textures. The moving and brilliant album recorded in New York saw the French Tunisian musician surround himself solely with American maestros for the first time: Mark Guiliana, Ben Williams, Ambrose Akinmusire and Aaron Parks. The dreamy poetry collection (diwan) by Dhafer Youssef gracefully wavers between strangeness and beauty.
