It may come as a surprise that Thomas Dutronc didn’t initially know what his calling was, but the route that led the son of Jacques Dutronc and Françoise Hardy to music was indeed circuitous. It began when a friend introduced him to the guitar and he developed an interest in rock and jazz music. Later, he stumbled on Django Reinhardt’s music — a revelation. At this point, he set off in his idol’s footsteps, hunting down his recordings and unpicking his solos via a kaleidoscope of clubs and festivals. ‘La Choppe des Puces’ in Saint-Ouen, the jazz manouche hotspot, almost became his second home as he slowly crafted his own style. Five albums later, Thomas Dutronc has undeniably made a (first) name for himself by drawing on his many sources of inspiration. And he’s never had to give up having fun or cast aside his sense of humour, without which he feels he couldn’t make music. His latest album, Frenchy, reinterprets ‘chanson française’ classics and features prestigious guests, from Iggy Pop and Diana Krall to Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top and even Jeff Goldblum, the actor turned pianist in his spare time. Thomas Dutronc’s experience, spirit and passion can only make this timeless repertoire shine brighter.
