Born in La Havane to a family of musicians – his father was a drummer and his mother, a singer and former dancer at the Tropicana Club – Robert Fonseca is one the foremost figures of Afro-Cuban energy-packed music, more than ever rooted in its history and traditions, yet sensitive to what’s happening in the world and to the diversity of music.
The pianist appeared on several albums released in the late 1990s and soon became one of most promising innovators in Latin jazz: in the 2000s, he learnt the ropes on tour with Buena Vista Social Club and with the legendary bolero singer Ibrahim Ferrer, while crafting his modernist style on the side mixing jazz, funk and Afro-Cuban soul. For his carte blanche at Jazz à Vienne, Roberto Fonseca will delve into his Creole roots. His eccentric, lyrical, generous music ranks among the most beautiful and universal utopias of today, building a bridge between times and continents.
