The new wave of British jazz has been knocking at the world’s doors for around half a decade now and there’s no end in sight. Although this will be Nubiyan Twist’s first performance at Jazz à Vienne and the musical collective hasn’t racked up the most appearances in France, their first release in 2015 set them squarely among the pioneers of this promising new generation. Led by guitarist Tom Excell, the nonet (comprising a trumpet player, alto, tenor and baritone saxophonists, musicians on the keyboard, guitar, bass and drums, a percussionist and a singer) has its ears trained on the greats of American jazz and the full breadth of acoustic and electronic music released in the UK and Africa. Their own music is a swooshing, gleeful blend of afrobeat, highlife, ethio-jazz and hip-hop, an irresistible dose of merriness. Always eager to collaborate (in 2019, ‘Jungle Run’ featured both Tony Allen and the ethio-jazz star Mulatu Astatke), they invited six guests (Ghanaian multi-instrumentalist K.O.G., London-hailing rapper Soweto Kinch and vocalist Ria Moran, amongst others) to open up their hearts for ‘Freedom Fables’, their third opus that offers autobiographic lyrics and the most exhaustive panorama of their protean soundscape to date.
