If someone had told trumpet player Olu Dara, on September 14, 1973, that his newborn Nasir Bin Olu Dara Jones – later known as Nas – would be headlining the 2020 edition of one of the world’s greatest jazz festivals, he would have probably wavered between pride and surprise! For in 1973, hip-hop culture was only taking its first steps in Bronx, New-York, and rap was not yet the major style it turned out to be a decade later.

Forty-six years later, Nas is about to tread the stage of the Roman Theatre, and share the wealth of his unrivalled experience in today’s rap game. The rhyme master is now a mic veteran and MC praised by his peers, since his sensational debut album “Illmatic”, produced by the best beatmakers at the time, i.e. Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor and Q-Tip, to name but a few. Nas was only 21, yet he depicted the reality of urban life with acute precision and great poetic flair – and handled emotions like very few in rap music.

In 2018, Nas released his best album in a while, “Nasir”, supervised by prolific, controversial, yet brilliant producer Kanye West. Let’s just imagine a crowd of 8.000 people moving to the rhythm of this outstanding MC. No doubt Ola Dara can be proud of his son.
