The love story between Marcus Miller, the most charismatic jazzman of the past 40 years, and Jazz à Vienne started in 1994. Since then, this exceptional composer and outstanding bassist has performed 7 times in the Roman Theatre. This is a place he now knows like the back of his hand. Let’s jump back in time for a quick review: he came in 1997 with the Legends (Eric Clapton, David Sanborn, Joe Sample and Steve Gadd, but a handful of people…), in 2009 with his fellows, Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten, in 2011 as artistic producer with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter for a Tribute to Miles (needless to say Miles Davis was a spiritual father to him), in 2015 with the Orchestre National de Lyon and of course with his own band in 2001, 2006 and 2013. Over the decades, the “Man with the hat” – almost as famous as that of Lester Young – has built strong ties with the audience of Vienne. People flood in to enjoy the gifted “great preacher of slap”: he is a melody-generating genius, completely devoted to music, brilliant at uncovering fresh talent – his orchestra is a hotbed for great musicians – and a natural leader. There is always a smile on his face and he is always eager to speak French, with unrivalled elan. As with all the giants of jazz music, just say “Marcus” and your mind will replay his music for you. For this special night at the Roman Theatre, Marcus will be given carte blanche. Chances are it will be one of celebration and sharing.

Marcus Miller invites for the evening the virtuoso tuba player Thomas Leleu.
