What a long way this young, British songwriter has come since her beginnings! When she rose to prominence on Myspace a dozen years ago, she already seemed equipped to catch the world’s attention: a powerful voice brushed through with just the right amount of harshness and a distinct taste for blending intimate acoustic guitar with a pop-rock ambience, vocal harmonies and sophisticated arrangements. So much so that she was knighted and invited to collaborate with a figure who has always known how to surround himself with talent: Prince. Since she released ‘Is Your Love Big Enough?’ in 2012, Lianne La Havas has taken the time to refine and broaden her style, venturing towards soul and performing her recording work with ever greater thoroughness. While ‘Blood’ (2015), with the meticulous architecture of its pieces, marked a change of style, her third, soberly eponymous album propelled her to new heights in 2020. It’s a rawer, more personal release that provides ample room for more sophisticated guitar arrangements.
