It’s been ten years since Imany released her acclaimed debut, ‘The Shape of a Broken Heart’. She made a perfect start to her musical career, her deep, husky voice sounding ideal in her autobiographic pop, soul and funk songs. A work of patience, her second album, ‘The Wrong Kind of War’, was larger in scope and showcased more sophisticated arrangements, new lyrics exploring social issues, and music that remained imbued with the same intimate charm, while merry and festive at times too. In her third opus, which is due to be released this autumn, Imany takes on the guise of an imaginary voodoo priestess and wraps herself in an eight-strong cello cocoon to reinterpret some of pop music’s biggest hits, from Donna Summer’s to Bob Marley’s, Daft Punk’s, Madonna’s and Radiohead’s, among others. Imany’s original creation has her weaving theatre, dance and live music into a genre-defying dialogue between the sacred and the popular.
