Over the past 15 years, Jazz à Vienne and Brad Mehldau have developed a special bond, one of friendship and mutual trust. Brad Mehldau made his first appearance at the festival in 1994 in Joshua Redman’s quartet and has returned ever since in ever different guises: leading his own trio, of course, but also alongside Kurt Rosenwinkel and as a duo with Pat Metheny, up until his splendid solo performance in 2010, which went down in the history of Jazz à Vienne. This year, Brad Mehldau agreed to stop off in Vienne on his prestigious international tour with Joshua Redman’s famous quartet Mood Swing, to celebrate the festival’s 40thanniversary and to treat the Roman Theatre with an exceptional solo concert. The renowned pianist made jazz history thanks to his revolutionary approach to the trio, but his skills as a soloist are just as impressive, as if each face-to-face with the piano were a way of utterly reinventing his art. Brad Mehldau’s solo performance combines all the magical ingredients of his polyphonic, kaleidoscopic style, with progressive key changes and subtle digressions fuelled by a deep desire for absolute expressiveness. Jazz à Vienne is thrilled to again welcome one of the great masters of jazz piano.
